Common Questions About Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
Generally, yes. Depending on your overall health and the types of additional procedures you are requesting, it is possible to combine surgeries. Liposuction is the most common procedure that is combined with a Tummy Tuck, followed by Breast Surgery (Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift, etc.).
Yes, if you are too overweight, your surgeon will advise you to be in your ideal weight range and maintain that stable weight for a period to qualify for a tummy tuck.
Liposuction removes fat from undesirable areas of the body. With liposuction the surgical incisions are small and recovery time is minimal. Liposuction by itself does not tighten excess skin from massive weight loss or childbirth.
A tummy tuck removes excess fat and skin and implies surgery to correct and tighten weakened abdominal wall muscles (diastasis recti). A tummy tuck’s surgical area is larger, and the incision is longer. Neither procedure is for weight loss, rather they both help boost your body confidence with a slimmer appearance and help you achieve your ideal body contour.
A tummy tuck is a safe operation, but with any surgery, you have the risks of bleeding, sensation changes, infection, seromas, contour irregularities and hematomas.
‘Mini’ refers to the length of the skin incision that is made and is generally less than the length used in a ‘Standard’ Tummy Tuck, which typically goes from hip to hip. Many prospective patients request a Mini Tummy Tuck to avoid a longer scar. Most patients who are candidates for a Tummy Tuck procedure, however, are not ideal candidates for a Mini Tummy Tuck. This is because the majority of patients present with excess skin and fat in their lower abdomen that cannot be adequately removed through a smaller incision.
Where a tummy tuck reconstructs the muscles underneath and removes excess skin, liposuction only removes excess fat. Liposuction will not remove or reduce loose or excess skin.
After your tummy tuck, you should plan to take 2 weeks off of work and you will be required to limit your physical activity. After 2 weeks you should be able return to work. You will have a draining tube for one day and wear a compression garment for 6 weeks following your surgery and an abdominal garment for 1 month.
You are a good candidate if you are currently at a stable weight and not planning to have any more children. Both men and women can be candidates for a tummy tuck.
Mini tummy tucks leave a scar approximately 15-20 cm long. The scar will be low on the abdomen and can be easily covered. A traditional tummy tuck leaves the same scar as a mini tummy tuck but a little longer with the addition of a possible small and short vertical scar up the abdomen.
This surgery is designed to get rid of all of the excess skin between your pubis and belly button. It also corrects abdominal muscles diastasis, which are usually stretched out after pregnancy.
The stretch marks between your pubis and belly button will be removed; those above the belly button will remain.
Within the first few weeks, almost all of the swelling is usually gone. It may take up twelve months to see the final result.
